A small sample of the area's history:

The tour departs from the Bay Of Islands Yacht Club and Marina. Historically, this land was known as Bartlett's Point. During WW2, the property was owned by Isaac Bartlett, Chief of Police in Curling. When we went to war with Germany, there were German citizens living in the area. Chief Bartlett was required by law to take them Prisoners Of War. As they were merely victims of circumstance, he took them into his home. To earn their passage back home, and to pay for their keep, while here they built a 500 foot rock wall, which still stands today. The property is now owned by Frank Bartlett, the grandson of Isaac Bartlett.

An overview of a sample tour:

This is a scenic tour of the beautiful Bay of Islands. The tour leaves from Pleasant Cove, where it is believed that Captain James Cook spent two winters.

This tour begins with the South Shore, known as Captain Cook's Trail. You'll get an up close view of the area where many of Corner Brook's historical events took place as your guide describes Benoit's Cove, a scenic fishing community where various species of fish are processed and distributed to international markets.

The Blomidon mountains provide the backdrop for our tour. They have been called a geologist's delight, formed several hundred million years ago when the North American and North African plates collided, resulting in the ocean floor of the Atlantic being thrust upward to form the mountains. These mountains are a part of the Appalachian range which run all the way south to the State of Georgia.

As we pass between Frenchman's Head to McIver's point, you will view Wood's Island, the largest in the Bay, where settlement dated back to the early 1800's. After the Newfoundland government's resettlement project in the early 1960's, the Island became uninhabited, except for one family which still resides on the island, and a scattering of summer homes which have since been built by descendants of former residents.

From there we move on to the North Shore of the Bay known as Admiral Pallister's Trail. Captain Hugh Pallister, friend and mentor of Captain James Cook, came with five warships in 1764 to patrol the fishing rights, persuant to obligations under the Treaty of Paris. In this area, you'll view several other beautifully kept communities with their colourful houses.

It is common to see Minke whales during our tour, as they frequent the area in the summer months, chasing herring and squid. We cannot guarantee sightings of any of the wildlife, as they are in their natural habitat.

On your tour with us, you will be treated to a taste of Newfoundland musical culture, provided to you by local musicians.

We have both inside and outside seating available on our tours. The tour of the Bay of Islands is approximately 1 ¾ hours long. Because you are out on the water, and the temperatures may vary, it is advisable to take along a jacket when you come aboard. Thank you for choosing to tour the Bay of Islands with us. Our skilled crew and knowledgeable tour guides work hard to ensure your tour with us is both memorable and informative.
